Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Review

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is absolutely a fantastic work of cinema! This is possibly one of the greatest animated films in the 21st century. Somehow this movie topped the first film! Not only does this movie push the boundaries of animation as we know it, but it also has a heart-felt story and explores the multiverse in ways that general audiences can understand. This is truly one of the best Spider-Man movies out there!

First, I would like to talk about the animation in this film. This animation is top-tier and displays some of the most impressive visuals I have seen in a long time. The sheer artistry that is on display is hard to believe. From the character design to the colorful settings, you truly get immersed in the film. This movie takes big swings in animation and lands them in its entirety. It pushes the medium of animation as we know it and I am grateful that we as the audience are able to experience this work of art on the silver screen. I can almost guarantee that this film will be heavily studied in film schools across the country. Not only does this film knock it out of the park with its animation but the story is mesmerizing as well. Across the Spider-Verse picks up perfectly where the first one finished. We finally get to see Miles Morales, become Spider-Man as we know him. He is fighting local crimes and is still juggling school and social life. It achieves what is needed from every sequel, retaining the heart of the original. This film does exactly that and keeps Miles Morales at the core of this movie. This movie also explores the multiverse in ways that general audiences can understand and enjoy. The multiverse is something that is complicated, but for this movie it is simply laid out how the multiverse works and the implications. There has been some criticism that there is too much multiverse but I would have to disagree with that. I think that this film properly uses the multiverse to expand on the stories of Miles and others. It's a very high stakes movie as well as it deals with things that are very personal to Miles. This film also expands on the characters of Miles's parents and Gwen. Miles's parents are struggling, and they can tell that Miles isn't telling everything, but they don't know how to go about it and Gwen is trying to provide emotional support to Miles, but she is also hiding things from Miles. This movie also has a lot of Spider-Man references and cameos that many Spider-Man fans, which includes me, really will enjoy. I would also like to talk about some of the awards chances that it has. This film has gotten rave reviews from both critics and audiences, some are even calling it the best Spider-Man movie of all time! For me, I believe that this will be the Best Animated movie of the year, and could easily win Best Animated Feature. Some people that I follow online are even saying it has the potential for Best Picture at the Oscars. We will have to wait and see but it definitely will be one of my favorites of the year.

Finally, I would like to talk about how perfectly this film wraps up. At the end of the movie and the credits start to roll, my audience was frustrated that the movie was over, just because of how great this movie really is. This movie ends off, setting up perfectly the start of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse which is supposed to release in 2024. This film exceeded all of my expectations and somehow topped the first movie. This film is truly incredible both in animation and storytelling. This is easily one of the best films of the year so far and I am excited to see the next installment very soon!
